Cocker Spaniel Puppies in Chapel Hill, NC
For families who read the studies before they read the marketing. Genetic testing, transparent pairings, and a breeder who can answer the question after the question.
Health-First, Documented
The kind of breeder a UNC vet would refer you to.
Chapel Hill buyers ask different questions. They want to see the Embark reports, understand the COI, hear about temperament on both sides, and know what happens if something goes wrong at year three. Good — those are the right questions, and we have direct answers for all of them.
Every Sovereign Spaniel pairing is planned against a written set of health, structure, and temperament criteria. We don't repeat-breed a pairing that produces anything we don't love. We don't keep dogs in our program past the age they should retire. That discipline is what produces a puppy that's still sound and sweet at age twelve.

Chapel Hill Buyer FAQ
Questions worth asking
- Is there a reputable Cocker Spaniel breeder near Chapel Hill, NC? +
- Yes — Sovereign Spaniel is a short drive from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the UNC campus. We serve faculty, hospital staff, graduate families, and longtime Orange County residents who want a health-tested puppy from a breeder who can answer hard questions.
- How do you health-test your dogs? +
- Every parent runs a full Embark panel that screens for 250+ genetic conditions, including the variants most relevant to Cockers: prcd-PRA, FN, AMS, and PFK deficiency. We will not breed a pairing that risks producing affected puppies — period. Results are shared with every reserved buyer.
- Are Cocker Spaniels prone to ear infections? +
- The long ears make routine ear care non-optional, but it's a 60-second weekly task, not a crisis. We teach every buyer the cleaning routine at pickup. Diet, allergies, and bath technique matter more than the breed reputation suggests — our adults rarely see the vet for ear issues.
- What's the lifespan? +
- 12–15 years is typical for a well-bred, well-cared-for Cocker. We breed for soundness over flash, so structure, eyes, and patellas are part of every pairing decision. Embark testing on both parents removes most of the genetic surprises.
- Do you work with veterinarians or trainers in the area? +
- We share a list of trusted Triangle-area vets and force-free trainers at pickup. Several Chapel Hill and Carrboro vets and trainers have seen multiple Sovereign Spaniel dogs and can speak to their temperament directly.
